Registrations of new commercial vehicles plummeted another 35.6
percent in January 2009 throughout Europe, according to
Brussels-based European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association
(ACEA).

The most affected segment was the van sector, which reported a
36.6 percent decrease compared to January 2008, with a drop
slightly more pronounced in Western Europe than in the new EU
member states.

Heavy trucks – those over 16 tons – decreased by 34.7 percent,
while lighter trucks were 33 percent down.

The drop was less pronounced for buses and coaches, which fell
by 15.8 percent.

The UK was the biggest market, and was also the only one among
the largest to post a growth, by almost 12 percent, while France,
Germany and Italy dropped by at least 15 percent.
