UniCredit Leasing has won the title of ‘European Lessor of the
Year’ at the 2009 Leasing Life Awards, held last night
(December 10) in Berlin, Germany.

Around 200 representatives from the European leasing industry
gathered at the Hotel Concorde last night to attend the awards
ceremony, held immediately after Leasing Life’s annual
asset finance conference.

Commenting on the 2009 ‘European Lessor of the Year’, Brendan
Malkin, editor of Leasing Life, said: “UniCredit Leasing
is not only Europe’s largest lessor by volume, but what has made it
so successful was something else. It was its new business strategy,
and what the company called a shift from ‘volume to value’, from
writing a high volume of new business to carefully focusing on
credit quality.”

The annual event seeks to identify organisations that have set
the benchmark for best practice in the industry, recognising
outstanding performance over the past twelve months. The awards
were judged by a panel of industry specialists, including a mix of
leasing experts, vendors and industry consultants from the private
and public sector.

“It is incredible to witness the support and enthusiasm for the
awards, which have grown considerably since they were launched
several years ago,” Malkin added. “This year, the ceremony has
taken place with the recession having hit the industry hard, and so
the winners and runners-up will not necessarily be those who have
signed vast amounts in new business, rather those who have
responded to the downturn effectively and intelligently.”
