Italy’s Intesa Sanpaolo could finance the new and long-awaited
undergroud system for the city of Bologna, it has been
reported.

At a round table to discuss growth an infrastructure
projects in Bologna, the city mayor Flavio del Bono announced that
financing to build a “Metrotranvia” for Italy’s seventh
largest city would be provided through a project financing scheme,
which could involve some leasing as well.

Intesa Sanpaolo’s Banca Infrastrutture Innovazione e Sviluppo
(BIIS), the group subsidiary for public-private partnership present
at the round table, said it was available for the financing.

Financing for the system, according to BIIS’ managing director
Mario Ciaccia, could be done using project financing, as well as a
real estate leasing scheme – with a so-called “leasing in
costruendo” formula.

For the project, the public sector is expected
to provide €270 million, while €150-200 million would be
provided through project financing with BIIS and other
partners.
