The number of new trucks registered in August plummeted to 1,855
units, 45 percent down compared to August 2008.

In the same period, new vans declined by 34.6 percent to
7,531.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt commented: “The truck and van
makers face exceptionally tough trading conditions and uncertain
demand. Businesses’ own need for new vehicles are well down
too.”

The SMMT expects that van and truck registrations will stabilise
at around 45 percent down on 2008, Everitt added.
