Italy’s leasing companies received 35,000
requests to join a payment holiday scheme between August and
December 2009, according to Italian leasing association
Assilea.

Assilea said that 28,000 applications from SME
businesses were for a moratorium on equipment leasing contracts
(for a six month period), and the remaining 7,000 were for real
estate leasing contracts (for a 12 month period).

The association said that two thirds of those
applications, some 22,000 requests, had already been approved,
and a total of around 3,000 had been rejected.

The moratorium scheme was introduced last year
to help troubled firms during the recession. The scheme was agreed
between banks, their leasing subidiaries, and employers’
association Confindustria, and backed by the Italian
government.
