Leaseurope, the trade body representing the leasing and automotive rental industry in Europe, has unveiled a webpage detailing how the sector can contribute to reducing Europe’s carbon footprint.

The website was launched to coincide with EU Green Week (31 May – 4 June) which has ‘zero pollution’ as its theme this year, this “resonates strongly within the leasing sector”, Leaseurope said in a press release.

“As Europe reduces its carbon footprint in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, the focus on producing and using energy-efficient assets, lowering CO2 emissions and creating clean energy has increased,” Leaseurope said.

Leasing and automotive rental have an important role to play in this endeavour, as they help European businesses invest in equipment, vehicles and real estate, the press release added.

The leasing and rental business model is essentially circular and assists in reducing pollution in many different ways.

  • Upgrading equipment to be greener and less polluting, conforming to new regulatory standards in a quicker timeframe
  • Reducing CO2 emissions within the lease and rental fleet, more sustainable mobility and transport sector
  • Investing in clean energy production
  • Specialising in the reuse and recycling of equipment and vehicles
  • Supporting the renovation wave through construction and real estate sectors
  • Declining greenhouse gas emissions within the leasing and rental sector itself

Leaseurope, as a federation, represents 46 associations across Europe ranging from hire purchase and finance leases to operating leases of all asset types (automotive, equipment and real estate) and includes the rental of cars, vans, and vans trucks. It is estimated that Leaseurope represents approximately 91% of the European leasing market.

EU Green Week comes on the heels of the Commission’s adoption of the EU Action Plan: “Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil” a key deliverable of the European Green Deal. This Action Plan sets out an integrated vision for 2050: a world where pollution is reduced to levels that are no longer harmful to human health and natural ecosystems, as well as the steps to get there. The plan ties together all relevant EU policies to tackle and prevent pollution, with a special emphasis on how to use digital solutions to tackle pollution.
