The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) highlighted mobility services as one key areas of focus in its 2018 Industry Outlook Report.

The report suggested that mobility services will increasingly become app-delivered with dealership-based car rental. While the BVRLA said it did not expect integrated mobility as a service to take off in 2018, it said the range of individual mobility services on offer will grow. It also stated that new technology, electrification and corporate demand will drive a 20% increase in the car club fleet.

Digitisation was also a key focus in the report, as ongoing investment will be required to harness every opportunity and that efforts are being made in the customer-facing elements of the business in order to provide a personal service that delivers brand loyalty.

The report said that 2018 will not be a ‘breakthrough’ year for electric vehicles, and that hybrids will continue to dominate EV registrations as they are an attractive alternative to diesel vehicles.

Connectivity will not see a major breakthrough either, as companies focus on becoming compliant with GDPR which will mean operators will rely on ‘brought-in’ rather than ‘built-in’ connectivity by the use of smartphone apps and dashcams.

Commenting on the increasing use of new technology within the industry, Gerry Keaney, chief executive of the BVRLA, said: “Our industry sees an opportunity to place itself at the centre of an increasingly fast-moving world of new of automotive technology and mobility services.

“This week the Government published an Industrial Strategy outlining its ambition to see the UK become the world’s most innovative nation by 2030. Our industry will help deliver this by embracing new technologies, not only relating to vehicle design and build, but also the way we interact with customers, operate fleets and use data.”

The BVRLA unveiled its 2018 Industry Outlook Report at the association’s annual industry conference, held at Nottingham’s East Midlands Conference Centre on 30 November.
