Facilities management and professional services company Mitie has ordered more than 560 electric vehicles through Lex Autolease this year.

With the ambition to fully electrify their fleet by 2030, this partnership is helping drive the company’s goal to help tackle climate change.

Mitie’s fleet is responsible for 93% of their carbon footprint and introducing electric vehicles positively contributes to their agenda.

Simon King, fleet and procurement director at Mitie, said: “Having ordered more than one quarter of Lex Autolease’s electric fleet in the past eight months, we’re proud that our partnership has helped drive our ambition to fully electrify our fleet by 2030.”

King said the EV 1000 initiative has proven to be a clear success to far in helping the effort to make all vans and cars on the roads zero-emission.

“We have committed to switching 20% of our fleet to electric vehicles by the end of 2020. Making the move to electric is the right thing for the planet and our people are queuing up to be the first to try out our new vehicles,” King added.

Associate director of Lex Autolease Chris Chandler believes this is a “challenging” but “achievable” goal for Mitie.

He said as a company with a significant fleet, they wanted to do the right thing by the environment, which reflects the changing mindset of the public with climate change a hot topic in the news.

Chandler told Leasing Life: “I think it’s fair to say there are different motivations for different businesses. Some are looking more at the cost impact or cost benefits, some are truly looking at it from an environmental perspective. I think this is growing and part of the reason for that is because its growing in the public’s awareness.”

He added: “I think we are definitely moving in the right direction. We have firms like Mitie who have said their primary rationale is they want to do the right thing by minimizing as much as you can to impact the environment.”

The government has pledged millions of pounds into the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles which encourages companies to consider them for their fleets.

David Bushell, principal consultant at Alphabet, said: “More and more businesses are very conscious of their impact on the environment, but equally from an operational perspective, they are having to consider these vehicles as part of their fleet operations.”
