The EU commercial vehicle market grew for the twelfth consecutive month in August, as sales grew 6.1% year-on-year to 104,686 vehicles, according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

For the eight months to the end of August, sales reached 1,171,120, up 9.1% from the 1,073,618 recorded over the same period in 2013.

Of the major markets France was the only country whose sales shrank in August and the eight months to the end of August down 6.1% and 1.0% respectively.

In August, Spain led the growth with 33.9% growth, followed by Italy (15.1%), the UK (12.8%) and Germany (7.5%).

The August growth came entirely from light commercial vehicles up to 3.5t sales, which grew 10.2% to 84,692 units.

In comparison, medium commercial vehicles up to 3.5t declined 7.4% in the month to 17,302 and heavy commercial vehicles over 16t sales declined 6.1% to 13,005. Bus and coach sales declined 12.7% to 2,692.

Growth for the eight month period to August was more balanced. Light and medium commercial vehicles grew by 11.1% and 3.0% respectively, and bus and coach sales grew by 4.%. Heavy commercial vehicle sales declined in this period, albeit by just 0.4%.
