Demand for commercial vehicles increased across the EU by 11.1% in March to 185,520 units, compared to figures from the same month in 2013, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Growth was sustained across all commercial vehicle segments, and overall the EU market grew 9.8% to 443,038 vehicles in the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same period the previous year.

Compared to first quarter results in 2013, double-digit expansion was witnessed in several European markets in the first three months of 2014, notably by Spain (+39%), Italy (+14.1%), Germany (+10.5%) and the UK (+10.4%), with France remaining the only major market to witness a decline of 0.6%.

In March alone, the Spanish market saw the biggest upturn at 26.8%, compared to the year before, while both Italy (+16.3%) and the UK (+11.0%) succeeded in outperforming their quarterly growth figures.

Across Europe, among the commercial vehicle categories surveyed, vans grew the most in March, expanding 12.4% year-on-year to 157,333 units, followed by heavy trucks (+7.7%) to 19,266 units, trucks (+4.2%) to 25,262, and buses and coaches (+4.4%) to a total of 2,925 units.
