Newly born BNP Paribas 3stepIT has received the Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions seal in recognition of the venture’s efforts to combine economic profitability and sustainability.

The label, launched by Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard following his solar flight around the world in 2018, aims to showcase leadership in clean technology investing as a necessity to limit climate change.

The Solar Impulse Foundation says its Efficient Solutions certificate is given to affordable and practical initiatives that offer opportunities for clean economic growth.

Chris Stalley, chief executive of BNP Paribas 3 Step IT said of the certification: “Our circular economy solution offers IT teams a rare combination of reduced cost, improved service and greater sustainability. This fits Efficient Solutions criteria well, and it’s good to have our claims rigorously and independently validated.”

“Sustainability is a growing factor in IT planning, with 15% of organisations saying it is a consideration today, and a further 67% say they intend to integrate sustainability into their IT plans within the next two years. As our branches open we will bring this solution to organisations across Western Europe by mid-late 2020,” he added.

The BNP Paribas 3 Step IT is a venture launched last year that helps companies manage their technology investments which are mainly smartphones, laptops and PCs.

The service adds value through the technology lifecycle and helps clients improve their IT service level with up to date equipment and provide devices at a lower cost.

The certification process requires a detailed description of the offering and then the information given is inspected by a panel of independent experts.

Certification takes approximately three months to complete and about a third of applications fail.

Bertrand Piccard said of the Solar Impulse Foundation: “We need to embrace clean technologies and efficient solutions because they are much more than ‘ecological’, they are ‘logical’. They create jobs and generate profit, while also reducing CO2 emissions and preserving natural resources. Even if climate change didn’t exist, they would make sense. Clean growth is much better than the dirty status quo we have today.”

BNP Paribas 3 Step IT refurbishes obsolete devices, rather than dumping them. This avoids contributing to electronic waste – which is the fastest growing waste stream on the planet and the source of 70% of landfill toxic waste.

The reuse displaces the manufacture of a new product and spreads the original manufacturing carbon footprint across two users.

This includes manufacture, transport and power costs in the calculation which reduces carbon footprint by 36%.
