Mobility and fleet leasing firm Alphabet (GB) has confirmed the appointment of Clive Buhagiar as its interim chief operating officer.

Buhagiar takes over the role from Uwe Hildinger, who will be joining Alphabet Germany as their new chief executive later this month. As interim chief operating officer, Buhagiar will be responsible for the whole operational function of Alphabet GB and will also continue in his current position as head of operational services.

Buhagiar joined Alphabet in 2011, starting as head of public sector following the acquisition of ING Car Lease. In 2014 he was appointed as head of commercial performance, where he led the team responsible for creating and driving Alphabet’s strategic customer and commercial initiatives. Buhagiar then became head of operational services in 2018, where he has focused on improving customer experience and cost control, working across the wider business, as well as with group partners and the supplier network.

Commenting on his appointment, Buhagiar said: “Having held a number of positions across Alphabet’s commercial and operations network over the last nine years, I’ve been fortunate to build and develop a strong strategic understanding of true customer insights and business operations to help deliver change for both Alphabet and our customers.

“I am looking forward to using this experience to continue the great work Uwe has already put into place, while anticipating the new challenges presented to us from the ‘new normal’ alongside the rest of the Management Committee.

“I’m pleased that in this interim role, I will be able to continue working with my current team, supporting the backbone of Alphabet GB with innovative developments in new vehicles and proactively managing changing consumer demands. I wish Uwe every success as he takes up the position of CEO of Alphabet Germany.”

Buhagiar will join the Alphabet Management Committee, assuming his new role on 1 August.

In September last year, Alphabet appointed Sascha Fricke as the company’s head of process management. Fricke joined Alphabet from Alphabet International where he served as head of operational risk and compliance. Fricke began his Alphabet career in 2012 within specialist risk controlling, during which time he worked to develop and roll-out risk controls and IT applications during the integration with ING Car Lease.
