European locomotive lessor Alpha Trains has entered a leasing agreement with RATH Group subsidiary VIAS Rail for 14 Stadler FLIRT1 electric multiple units (EMUs).

The agreement will see these five-car EMUs operating on the upcoming Emscher Express Network as of December 2026. The leasing agreement and the transport contract will both run until December 2030.

Alpha Trains said the trains will undergo redesigns, including new upholstery, interior fittings, and technical updates.

VIAS Rail will operate these trains on the RE 3 line, the Rhine-Emscher Express, covering Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, and Hamm.

Additionally, the trains will serve the RE 41 line, the Vest-Ruhr-Express, from Bochum to Haltern am See, currently operated by DB Regio.

The deployment of these trains on both lines is expected to increase seating capacity and promote sustainable regional rail transport.
