3stepIT has appointed Tiia Katajamäki to the newly created role of senior manager, sustainability.

Katajamäki (pictured below) will report to the chief operations officer and is tasked with driving 3stepIT’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), with an early focus on the company’s zero carbon and zero waste agenda, the company said.

This new role is an integral part of delivering on 3stepIT’s ambition to be a world leader in sustainability, working with its customers to eliminate electronic waste by ensuring business-critical technology is managed efficiently and responsibly.

Katajamäki is an economist by trade who has more than 12 years’ experience working in data management and business development, with a focus on sustainability, cleantech and circular solutions.

She will also be responsible for overseeing 3stepIT’s ESG strategy, ‘Go Circular’, which is due to be released publicly later this year.

Last year, 3stepIT prevented more than half a million IT devices from reaching landfill, with thousands of customers adopting its technology lifecycle management solution worldwide. Its work was recognised by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which awarded 3stepIT an almost perfect score (Grade A) in its inaugural Circulytics™ assessment, which rates companies on circular economy progress.

Carmen Ene, chief executive of 3stepIT, said: “We take our responsibility to minimise our impact very seriously and the whole team works tirelessly to eliminate waste in every form across our operations. But by far the most significant contribution we can make to the fight against global warming is to help more businesses to adopt the principles of circular economy and consume technology in a greener way.

“Every business that adopts our technology lifecycle management solution represents an office-full of laptops, mobiles and tablets that will not end up in landfill – a win for our customers and for the planet.

Katajamäki, said“It is rare to work for a company with not only a laser focus on reducing its footprint, but also an incredible ability to make a positive impact, by enabling customers to reduce their carbon emissions and eliminate electronic waste.

“There is a huge opportunity for us to support more businesses towards carbon neutrality, as many companies are still just beginning to look at technology consumption as a way to reach their sustainability goals. The circular economy also represents a huge opportunity for both businesses and society and it’s exciting to work for a company, widely recognised as a leader in this field.”

Based in Helsinki, Katajamäki previously worked as the sustainability development manager at TietoEVRY, where she was responsible for the digital services company’s global energy roadmap and supply chain CR management. Before this, she held senior sustainability roles at the City of Helsinki, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and Nokia.

Website revamp

3stepIT has also announced the launch of its revamped website “to help organisations accelerate their transition to sustainable IT consumption” the company said.

As businesses look to implement cleaner, greener solutions across the value chain, one crucial area for scrutiny is IT procurement and disposal of legacy tech.

“The website is designed to provide CIOs, procurement officers and sustainability leaders with practical insights on how easy it is to switch to a circular computing model that does away with the traditional ‘buy, use’ dispose’ attitude that’s so entrenched in many organisations,” a press release said.

“Visitors to the website will see the benefits of a ‘take, make, reuse, recycle’ approach to IT management. This is an essential consideration given e-waste continues to be a mounting problem globally,” the company said.

Carmen Ene, CEO at BNP Paribas 3 Step IT and 3stepIT, said: “One of the biggest challenges facing businesses lies in tackling the mounting e-waste problem. 3stepIT has been a trusted voice in the sustainable technology management space for over 20 years and it’s by continuing to invest in our services and tools, that we’re able to provide the support our customers have come to expect. Our updated website will make it even easier for businesses to learn about TLM and IT asset disposal, and implement more sustainable business IT processes.”
