Hair shirts all round at the Leaseurope convention in Hamburg, where a curious one-upsmanship (or is that one-downsmanship?) took hold among the leaders of some of Europes top lessors. De Lage Landen CEO Ronald Slaats started it, explaining how costs at his company had been cut through a process which included Slaats taking a lower salary than his predecessor. Not to be outdone, Jean-Marc Mignerey of SG Equipment Finance quickly pointed out that his own salary had been voluntarily reduced before the banking crisis.

Top lessors ranked for 2009
Leaseurope has released its ranking of the top European leasing companies for 2009, with some notable changes to the top 10. UniCredit Leasing lost its 2008 number one ranking in terms of new business in Europe, dropping to fourth place in the table. BNP Paribas Equipment Solutions took the top spot, with about 12.5bn of new business written in Europe in 2009, while SG Equipment Finance moved up to second place and Deutsche Leasing came in third.

Sharing tip-offs about fraud saves lessors millions
The Finance & Leasing Association(FLA) Credit Communities Service was launched by the FLA in conjunction with operator Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) in April 2009, with the aim of giving FLA members a secure and discreet way of alerting each other to suspicious potential customers. This year the service expanded to include members of the Asset Based Finance Association, on the basis that a potential fraudster approaching an asset finance company might well go on to approach an ID or factoring provider, or vice versa.
UniCredit targets EUR550m to SMEs
UniCredit Leasing will get 550m from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support small and medium-sized enterprises and renewable energy projects. This is the latest credit line granted directly to the UniCredit subsidiary by the EUs long-term lending institution

At Euro Auctions sales in the UK and Germany during the first half of 2010, it became apparent that a recovery is underway in the plant market In some cases and on certain items of plant, prices have recouped to within 10% of where they were before prices crashed in 2008.
