Romania, already possessed of two leasing associations, may soon
find itself gifted with a third comprising the country’s operating
leasing specialists.
The Eastern European economy currently has a brace of trade
bodies: the Association of Leasing Companies in Romania (ASRL), and
the Association of Financial Companies (ALB). ALB currently
includes consumer lenders and financial leasing companies alongside
its operating lessor members.

Speaking last week, ASLR vice president Cristian Gala (also the
head of BT Finop Leasing) said: “It is important that we stick
together. If we want to develop the operating leasing industry in
Romania to reach a market share of ten to fifteen percent, we need
to promote ourselves better. We need a single voice to promote this
type of service and I call for an operating leasing association, to
avoid confusion between the two types of products.”
The companies Sixt New Kopel, Hertz Lease, Dirent Romania,
LeasePlan, Fleet Management Services (FMS) and Alexandros Long Term
Rental all spoke in favour of a separate operating leasing
association, while ALD Automotive and Porsche Mobility said they
would rather have operating leasing companies join ALB.
“We have to be aware that the operating leasing market is not
that large, and I don’t know if a new association would be
justified,” said ALD general manager Martin Koessler.
In most European countries, it is common practice for both types
of leasing company to be represented by the same association.
