Photograph of the crowd at the Leasing Life Asset Finance Awards giving him a standing ovation as he collects his awardFirst of all I
want to thank you most sincerely for your support at the awards
evening in Milan.

Receiving an award was very
special to me, particularly as it had never crossed my mind that a
Lifetime Achievement Award was on the agenda this year. I must be
getting old as I never picked up any of the vibes and I have always
prided myself that it is one of my skills set.

The purpose of this note is not
only to thank you, Bill [Elliott, Leasing Life chairman], Andy
[Denton, CHP Consulting COO] and the whole of the CHP team, but
also to say that as my mind went blank with the shock on the night
I now know that I should have resisted mumbling on about the
industry and spoken more about the many friends in the room and my
thanks to them.

To turn back towards the
audience after being given the Award and face a room full of 200
people all standing and applauding was something I will never
forget.

I will also never forget the old
Boy Scout adage of Be Prepared! When it came to the crunch the
emotion and adrenaline kicked in and with that cocktail the mind
and voice just disappear, so with hindsight I realise that
improvised preparation just doesn’t work.

My purpose of writing is to ask
if you would pass my heartfelt thanks on to all of those kind folks
who attended the dinner and also those who joined in the
magnificent Awards celebrations organised by Andy and the CHP team
at the Bulgari Hotel, where I lasted until around 2.30am. Not
normal after fifty years in the business; I am usually much earlier
than that, accompanied by a nice cup of cocoa.
