The boat market in Italy is increasing,
according to statistics released at the Genoa 48th International
Boat Show, but several elements prevent it from growing even
further.

With more than 30,000 people working in the industry,
and the number of units increased from 400,000 to 615,585
since 2000, the sector has shown an impressive growth over the last
decade. The total turnover has almost tripled from €2.2bn to
€6.2bn.

But Lorenzo Selva, president of Ucina, the Italian marine
industry association, said that several factors have limited a
further expansion. “Regulatory and infrastructural difficulties
regarding hiring, renting, leasing and ports are hindering a
further growth in the domestic market.”

Ucina stressed that leasing procedures need to be improved and
that boat production by Italian manufacturers should be favoured,
fearing that shipowners could prefer to turn to countries such as
France and Croatia, where the tax burden is considered lower.

Figures show that leasing is the preferred option for over 80
percent of people who decide to purchase a boat or a yacht, and
that from 2003 to 2008 the leasing sector has financed around €8bn,
of which €582 million were paid as VAT.
