The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) has
announced that its members have cut 3m tonnes of carbon emissions
from their fleets over the past four years – equivalent to 1.5
tonnes of CO2 for every business car in BVRLA members’ fleets.
A survey of BVRLA members found that average emissions of CO2
fell from 171.8g/km in 2003 to 157.4g/km in 2007 – a fall of over 8
per cent. Average mileage per business driver fell too, from over
25,000 miles per year in 2003 to 21,643 miles in 2007.

Calling the amount of CO2 saved “staggering”, BVRLA
director-general John Lewis promised to go even further in helping
association members cut their fleet carbon emissions, pointing to
the recent launch of a greener motoring section on the BVRLA
website which offers carbon footprint calculation, among other
services. He concluded: “The savings have been tremendous so far,
as have been the benefits of safer, more eco-friendly driving, but
we now want to go even further and save at least the same amount of
CO2 again but this time over a much shorter period.”
