The first report, which covers 2011, shows an improvement in leasing ratios between 2010 and 2011, tempered by a decline over the last quarter. It also showed the relative proportions of different segments within the European leasing portfolio, with equipment finance being the largest with 41%, real estate accounting for 30%, and passenger and commercial vehicles accounting for 22% and 7% respectively.

Equipment finance saw an improvement in profitability for 2011 with the ratio reaching 30% for the first three quarters, while the passenger car sector rose to 40% over the same period. However, profitability in both segments dropped significantly in the fourth quarter.

The spokesperson described the Leaseurope Index, which was launched at the start of 2011, as "a very successful and productive project towards developing a benchmarking tool for the leasing industry" and added the body hopes the segment breakdown in its latest research project will be especially useful for leasing companies which specialise in particular assets as well as for leasing companies interested in comparing the performance of different leased assets.

Research for the report was conducted in the third quarter of this year and the full results are available from Leaseurope. The 2012 report will be released around April 2013.
