Globally, half of all fleet drivers would feel comfortable having a telematics device installed in their car, according to LeasePlan’s 2015 MobilityMonitor.

Interviewing 4,000 drivers from 17 countries, 39% said having a telematics device would alter their driving behaviour, up from 35% in 2014. A total of 15% said it would cause them to drive more cautiously up from 9%, and 12% said it would cause them to pay more attention to fuel consumption.

Nick Salkeld, chief commercial officer at LeasePlan, said: "Telematics can drive a company’s fleet efficiency. Not only from an economic point of view, as increased safety and higher recovery rates of stolen cars will lead to reduced insurance claims, but also with respect to environmental compliance by means of a reduction of fuel consumption and car usage. The increase in driver acceptance, as demonstrated by this research, will help achieve these benefits".

The study also found 13% of people said they would be interested in potentially using a car sharing solution, up from less than 19% in 2014. Males aged between 18-34 were the most likely to agree to this, at 16%.

Salkeld said: "We see increased interest in the concept of ‘usage’, which means that assets are shared rather than owned, and a tendency towards subscription-based products and services.
"There is an increasing demand for sharing solutions especially among younger working professionals in large cities where parking costs and living expenses are high."

Half of all drivers also expressed an interest in the option for private leasing to be an additional labour condition (where a lease for a private vehicle is paid out of the salary). Three out of ten said they would use it for a second car.
