Lawrence was formerly global head of group internal audit for HSBC. During a 31 year career with the bank, Lawrence was chief executive officer of HSBC Bank North America, head of global banking & markets USA, chief executive officer of HSBC Singapore, and chief executive officer of HSBC Philippines.

The appointment comes after the challenger bank hired former Yorkshire Building Society chief executive officer Iain Cornish as its chairman.

Cornish said: "Paul brings over 30 years’ commercial and operational experience in banking and will be a valuable addition to the Board of Shawbrook. I look forward to working with him and to his contribution to the continued success of the Group."
