In 2016, law researchers Chambers & Partners, who compile a yearly ranking of solicitors in Britain, listed him in Band 2 (of 3) for both the ‘transport rail’ and ‘asset finance: rail’ categories.

Smith also previously worked held posts at DLA Piper and Norton Rose Fulbright.

Amanda Gray, AG’s divisional managing partner for finance and projects, said: “Clive is very highly regarded in the asset finance world. We already have a successful asset finance practice covering aviation, shipping and rail.”

“Clive’s broad … experience, coupled with his rail expertise, will complement both our finance practice and the firm’s transport sector focus.”

Head of transport, Paul Hirst, said: “We have significantly grown our transport practice over the past three years, particularly in rail, which is a key focus for us. Clive’s reputation, expertise and client base will support our plans to continue growing our rail practice into a top tier [one]. We are very pleased he is joining us.”

Clients for AG’s rail asset finance team include Hitachi Rail Europe, Network Rail and Greater Manchester’s light rail network Metrolink. The team also secured a seat on the Department for Transport’s rail panel, an advisory collective to the government.
