Romanian leasing down in Q1

Romania’s Financial Companies Association (ALB) has announced a 32% drop in leasing contracts signed by its members, down to a combined value 235.7 million in the first quarter of 2010 compared to a year earlier. About 97% of lessors operating in Romania are members of the ALB, and the remaining signed leasing contracts worth an estimated 7.1 million in the first quarter of this year. Motor vehicle leasing remained the most attractive for financial companies, accounting for 59% of the total market last year, followed by real estate leasing at 27% and equipment leasing at 14%.

Nordea Finance aims high in Baltic states

Scandinavian lessor Nordea Finance has set its sights on becoming the leading leasing and factoring provider in the Baltic states by 2012, it was reported. Nordea Finance Latvia CEO Ivars Smits made the announcement at a news conference on 25 May.

Glasgow dairy signs sale-and-leaseback deal with SGEF

Glasgow-based dairy producer Robert Wiseman Dairies has agreed a sale and leaseback deal for its processing and packing equipment. The agreement with SG Equipment Finance raised a total of about £45.3 million (53.5 million) for Wiseman.

Leasing upturn but industry still suffering, says FLA

Investment by British businesses using asset finance is seeing the first signs of an upturn, according to figures published by the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA). Leaseurope repeats pleas as new lease accounting model discussed

Leaseurope continues to try to persuade the IASB and FASB to come up with reasonable proposals for future IFRS leasing accounting. The two boards held meetings this week and the IASB has said it will consider a hybrid approach which could see lessors applying to five accounting models. Leaseurope, which represents the industry in Europe, claims this appears to be the result of yet another attempt by standard setters to come up with quick-fix accounting to reach converged IFRS and US GAAP approaches under unrealistic timeframes.

Stagecoach signs hire purchase deal

Public transport operator Stagecoach has this month (May) signed a £5.8 million (6.7 million) hire purchase agreement for 36 double decker buses.
