Forget tea and biscuits – this year we’re brewing 120,000 Nvidia GPUs worth of compute power. (For the non-techies: GPUs are the muscle behind AI)

That’s Europe’s biggest AI cluster and as of today would make the UK the third largest in the world behind the US and China. Worth USD$21 billion and placing GB 5th in the world on the AI readiness (score 78.9)

It is backed by £11 billion of investment creating  AI Growth Zones aiming to grow 5,000+ UK jobs, with confirmed zones in the North East (Newcastle/Blyth), South Wales, and North Wales (Anglesey/Gwynedd), alongside a pilot in Culham, Oxfordshire.

The plan includes opening a DeepMind autonomous (fully automated) experimental lab that will use AI and robotics to perform scientific research without constant human involvement. Also up is a Transport AI Action Plan with self-driving autonomous vehicle pilots.

While the US and China flex their mega-scale muscles, the UK is punching above its weight for sure, building the backbone for global AI leadership.
