UK based Axis Intermodal, a major player
in the European road freight contract hire market, has recently
made bold steps into the world of shipping container leasing.

Currently, Axis has 15,000 containers on book, but plans to
manage a portfolio of 25,000 by H2 2009 and up to 50,000 in H2
2010.

This hearty expansion plan has been laid out despite a decline
in margins for Asia-Europe shipping routes, with the hope for Axis
being that intra-Asian traffic will remain healthy and continue to
grow.

Container leasing veteran Clive Francis, who has become involved
with Axis’ new shipping venture, mused on possibilities for growth:
“We will look to grow organically but will work with the financial
institutions. There are a lot of banks starting to own container
assets and they will need an experienced container business to
manage them.”

Francis predicts an accelerated lifecycle for container assets
over the coming years, but is convinced that demand from the US
domestic storage industry will maintain healthy Residual
Values.
