A lack of easily available credit is forcing operators to take
up increasing amounts of contract hire and rental options,
according to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT).
It also revealed that van sales in August went down 24.7 per
cent compared with a year ago, while truck sales dipped 3.2 per
cent.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: “In the short term,
van registrations will continue to struggle, although the truck
sector is holding total CV figures close to the three-year average.
In the longer term, we expect an overall and marked downward
trend.”
David Farbon, commercial director for Fraikin, commented: “Once
operators cross over from purchasing, they tend to realise that
contract hire is a sensible choice. It lets you predict costs and
plan ahead.”
