UK bus and coach registrations have shown some signs of
recovery in March, with big buses performing particularly well,
although industry experts have warned that figures could soon go
down.

According to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT), big bus registrations last month were up by 42 percent
compared with the previous year to 393 units.

Coaches, on the other hand, were down 35 percent to 134 units,
while among other sectors, big single deckers had a particularly
good performance.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “March big bus
registration data show the benefit of last year’s strong sales and
their long lead times”.

But he added that the effects of the recession were “beginning
to bite” and that orders were going down which, he expected, would
be reflected in fewer registrations in the coming months.

“Because it will take time for any of the Chancellor’s financial
stimulus policies to work, we all need the government to do more to
encourage demand and ease access to credit,” he added.
