Commercial vehicle registrations across Europe decreased by
another 39 percent in May compared to one year ago. This is the
thirteenth consecutive month of dropping registrations, with an
overall decline of 37.6 percent since the start of the year.
Vans were down by an average 38 percent compared to May 2008,
but the drop was significantly larger in the CEE region, with a
-80.8 percent recorded in the Czech Republic and a -69 percent
recorded in Romania. In Western Europe, the UK and Spain recorded
the biggest drop, by 50.4 and 50.9 respectively. In total, 115,342
new vans were registered.

Mid-sized trucks – between 3.5 tons and 16 tons – plunged by
44.8 percent totalling 20,659 units. The biggest drops were
recorded in Spain, where registrations fell 73.5 percent, in Czech
Republic (-63 percent) and Poland (-60.6 percent).
Registrations for heavy trucks – those over 16 tons – fell to
13,343 units, which is a 49.6 percent decline compared to May 2008.
All major markets contracted significantly, reaching 51.7 percent
in the UK, 55 percent in Italy and 79.5 percent in Spain. In the
new EU member states, results dropped even more sharply, by 64.5
percent in the Czech Republic, 66.2 percent in Poland and 79.6
percent in Romania.
