Van registrations in the UK continued their drop in September,
while trucks were given a temporary boost, the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said.

According to SMMT figures for September, registrations were
234,325 for the rolling year, down 37.8 percent.

For the rolling year, van registrations were 39.7 percent down,
while truck registrations showed a 28.3 percent decline.

However, on a monthly basis, trucks had a 5.4 percent increase
with 6,522 units being registered last month.

Paul Everitt, chief executive at SMMT, commented: “As
anticipated, September registrations were given a temporary boost,
by both the new ’59 plate and the end of availability of Reduced
Pollution Certificates for Euro 4 and 5 trucks.”

“This demonstrates the positive effect a small incentive can
have on the market, but does not yet signal an end to the severe
impact of the recession.”

Overall, he said, business confidence remains fragile in the CV
sector.
